Creative Dance - Ages 3-6 years old is a specialized program designed to introduce the young child to the world of dance. Simple stretches, creative dance (an introduction to classical music and slow, controlled movements) and dances with motor skills development props gives your young dancer the best beginning on their journey through the world of dance. Included in the curriculum are holiday dances and themed dances that offer a fun and exciting way for your child to learn.
Ballet - Ages 8 & up is the serious study of an art form that is over 400 years old. Formal ballet training is the strongest of all forms of dance. Any child can benefit from good ballet training - posture, self-discipline, artistic achievement and overall good health are just some of the many benefits. Ballet in a professional school is taught on levels-not by age-and a child should be 8-9 years old and entering the third or fourth grade, depending on their maturity level, before they begin formal ballet lessons. The serious nature of the class and the action of learning "turn-out" by the bones and muscles cannot be achieved safely before this age. Students entering the ballet program are usually selected from the Tap/Jazz/Creative classes based on their aptitude for ballet training- an appreciation of classical music, well controlled dance movements, good posture and acceptance towards self-discipline. Ballet classes include units each semester on Modern and Contemporary dance so that dancers get the best, well-rounded education possible and learn the needed skills to dance professionally later on if they choose to.
Tap, Jazz and Creative - Ages 5 & up dance is a combination class designed to teach students basic tap skills - rhythm and small motor skills; Jazz is taught to increase strength, flexibility and physical fitness, each semester includes units on all forms of Jazz dancing including hip-hop and musical theater and fun holiday themed dances. Creative dance is the "fore-runner" of formal classical ballet training and helps the development of slow controlled movements and an appreciation for classical music and prepares the child for more serious ballet study as they grow.
Tap & Jazz - Ages 9 & up is combination class for the older student who is ready to concentrate more intently on several dance subjects. Exercises are increased in length and difficulty to promote well-trained, agile dancers. This class also includes units each semester on musical theater and all forms of Jazz Dance including hip-hop and contemporary dance
Contemporary, modern, theater, and various other perfoming arts classes are offered in workshop form and are announced throughout the year if they become available.
